WCLIB History

The West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) was originally established as the West Coast Lumberman’s Association (WCLA) when four small regional associations in the northwestern part of the U.S. joined forces in 1911. In 1923, the WCLA together with other regional lumber associations, formed the first national committee for lumber standardization under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 1941, the WCLA created a new division, The West Coast Bureau of Lumber Grades and Inspection, to enhance the identity of the grading and inspection services provided by the association. The name was later changed to the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau. In 1968, the WCLIB was formally incorporated as an independent organization when the promotional arm of the WCLA was disbanded.

The WCLIB is currently one of only six organizations in the United States accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write and promulgate lumber grading rules, and provide grade inspection and supervision services. The WCLIB is also accredited by the ALSC to provide heat treating inspection and supervisory services for manufacturers of wood pallets and crating.

The WCLIB provides grade inspection and supervision services to member mills in the western states as well as throughout the continental U.S. and Europe. WCLIB is governed by a Board of Directors composed of twenty-two persons elected from the membership.


American Institute of Timber Construction

West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau Assumes Structural Glued Laminated Timber Certification Program of the American Institute of Timber Construction

In January 2013, West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) assumed the structural glued laminated timber certification services of the American Institute of Timber Construction (AITC). This was made possible by a unanimous vote by the manufacturing members of AITC. At that time, the manufacturing members of AITC became members of WCLIB.

WCLIB continues the following AITC activities and services:

  1. Continue the quality assurance policies and practices of AITC for their manufacturing members.
  2. Maintain the AITC website, www.aitc-glulam.org.
  3. Host the annual AITC Technical Meeting.
  4. Update and publish the numerous AITC publications available on the AITC website that provide guidance to glued laminated timber designers and owners of structures with glued laminated timbers.
  5. Continue the use of the AITC logo on glued laminated timbers and publications.
  6. Provide technical support in answering questions regarding the use of glued laminated timbers.
  7. Represent the AITC manufacturing members in the technical and standards-writing activities such as ASTM International and the International standards Organization.

Together, AITC and WCLIB members work to be leaders in the forest products industry as producers of quality building materials.
